DEUP: Cultural Practice and Embodied Transmission
This project undertook an exploratory investigation into how knowledge is embodied and transmitted through cultural practices. This phase combined practice-based research in Senegal, conducted in close collaboration with community elders, with collaborative artistic research in Australia. Research findings were published through multiple artistic “sites of knowledge,” including a series of music recordings and the short documentary film DEUP.
The study focused on identifying the key artistic practices that sustain these knowledge systems and the processes through which they are transmitted. By examining these practices, the research provided foundational insights into how guéwel music encodes a broader cosmovision, establishing a critical basis for subsequent stages of the initiative that further investigate guéwel knowledge systems as embodied epistemic practices.
